Content is the current hot buzzword in online marketing. (That’s content the noun as in “stuff” rather than content the verb as in “satisfied”).
I even use it myself and normally I hate buzzwords with a passion.
So what’s it all about? Content Marketing is about sharing items – content – that your clients and potential customers find interesting or useful. From a simple funny picture to a complex infographic. A snippet of news on Facebook to an e-book. It links your website blog to your email marketing and social media.
Content Marketing is key for Small Business SEO
You may have heard about Panda & Penguin, Google’s recent updates which changed the way Google rates websites for search rankings. These changes now make content marketing and its key components an essential part of SEO. And it’s not just about search rankings. To really be successful with social media, such as Facebook, you need to be giving your fans something worthwhile in return for their support.
It’s no longer enough to build a website, exchange a few links and forget about it for 5 years – in today’s online world you need to stand out from the crowd of “buy my stuff” messages by regularly publishing great content, through blogging, social media and other online channels.
Content Marketing isn’t just for the big players
When I ran The Wedding Crafter, content was a key part of our marketing. We published a new Step by Step project every month and also created a large number of tips and techniques articles. We gave away downloadable templates (which made our products easier to use). We then included links to these with taster paragraphs in our monthly newsletter. Our articles attracted links and our free templates were often linked to on forums. The end result – we sold more!
